U.S. Census Bureau / Demographics {{ Shawnee Correctional Center }} Opened: December 1984 Business Mail: Inmate Mail: The Shawnee Correctional Center is a high-medium security facility, housing adult male felons located in rural Johnson County in extreme southern Illinois. It is also responsible for a satellite facility, the Hardin County Work Camp located near Cave-in-Rock. Shawnee Correctional Center opened in 1984. Highlights The Shawnee Correctional Center continued to provide uninterrupted essential services despite losing 18 percent of the staff due to the state's Early Retirement Incentive (ERI). Offender assaults on staff dropped during the year by more than 50 percent, from 19 to eight. Total staff injuries also decreased by more that 14 percent from the prior period. Offender-on-offender assaults also dropped significantly, from 143 in the prior year to 92. Conclusion FY 2003 will be remembered as a year of "doing more with less." Staff assaults and injuries deceased from the prior year due to staff alertness and open levels of communication among all staff. The overall appearance and cleanliness of the facility remained excellent during the year. Shawnee and Hardin County employees continued their unmistakable commitment to their community via off-duty involvement with the law enforcement and Corrections "Torch Run" to benefit Special Olympics, the American Cancer Society's "Relay for Life" in Johnson County and an array of other charitable and community-minded endeavors. |
