On Aug. 16, 1997, it was formally announced that Lawrence County would be the home of a new Level 2 secure-medium adult male correctional facility. The ground was broken for construction during a ceremony held on Sept. 12, 1998.

Since its inception, Lawrence Correctional Center has developed into a 56-acre compound that is situated on 160 acres of land. The complex incorporates approximately 364,000 square feet of space within 16 buildings. Eight of these buildings function as housing units for the inmate population, which along with the Segregation Unit and infirmary will extend the maximum inmate capacity to 2,426.

The center is one of the largest, most state-of-the-art correctional centers in Illinois. Its unique T-cell house design is one of the largest innovations in correctional facility structures today. There are many other distinctive design characteristics such as the armed towers with catwalks and the strategic placement of the warehouse and maintenance buildings located outside the facility's inner perimeter.

Lawrence Correctional Center's mission is to provide for the protection of society through the humane and secure incarceration of adult male offenders based upon the foundation of legislative and judicial decisions. The institution's administration is committed toward the instillation of responsibility and mature decision making by inmates. By providing extensive and high quality educational programs, work assignment opportunities, leisure time activities and religious services, the institution is expected to go far beyond the provision of the minimum necessities of food, sanitation, clothing, housing and medical services to the inmates of the facility.
